meredith and i were sending each other some of these back and forth today, and i came across an obama one. amazing use of typography and motion graphics. use the related links bar on the side of the video to look at other kinetic type from movies and other speeches. "You Can Have Whatever You Like" -Clifford Joseph Harris Jr.
Bored? Cabin Fever? Check these out.
For anyone who likes adobe kuler.. here is something I think is cooler. You can search color palettes, patterns and more. You can even download the patterns for your desktop, and download the color palettes straight to your favorite adobe application. Santa's Panties pattern is a hot commodity this season.

FREE VECTOR DOWNLOADS!
That's right, I said it.
If you don't have the time to create an illustration for a guy scuba diving, this place is for you. And, okay, you're right, stock photography sucks. BUT it's free and/or cheap on this site, so for people on budgets like us, it is perfect. It has a bazillion links to sites that have everything a designer dreams of, just scroll to the right.

SENIOR THESIS SHOW DATES

This is primarily for Ian, but do we have concrete dates for our senior show??
The e-mail Don sent us to confirm how our names were spelled was incorrect I believe.. at least according to Donny. (?)
Those dates were May 12-23.
Can someone please e-mail or call Petra and find out when our show is? This will help out a lot since we're going to start having timelines next quarter. Her information is below + when we have an answer can it be posted on the blog? Thanks much!

5 Reasons Why the New Pepsi Logo SUCKS!!!
http://web.mac.com/steffan/Blue_Ember/EmberBlog/Entries/2008/11/8_The_terrible_new_Pepsi_Logo.html
My Personal Favorite.....
#4 Don’t Use Fake Math to Justify Why It Looks Bad
In the new promotional video that supports the re-brand, a retrospective of the branding shows all the geometry involved in each logo over the years.
First of all, this is silly, since they’re almost certainly imposed retroactively, for the most part. 1973’s structure makes perfect sense, but the 1950 mess defies satire. To top it off, the given structure of the 2008 logo doesn’t actually match the real “structure” of the logo. At all. This is because it has no structure. If it did, it might not look so terrible.

Vice Presidental Debate...
Lulu requirements !
This is all from Lulu's website:
Final trimmed page size 8.25 x 10.75
*this means the page size of the pdf, with bleed, should be .25 inches larger in both width and height than the final book.
They trim all four sides of each page equally.
have a .2 or .3 gutter
DPI between 300-600 (600 dpi is the limit)
Export as individual pages and do NOT include crop or registration marks
Outline all type before you export to PDF
Don't use tints below 20% because they probably won't print correctly
Use CMYK tiffs whenever possible.
*however if original workflow was RGB don't convert it to CMYK
thanks JH

So Jonathan Hoefler has FINALLY figured out this terrible problem that has been plaguing typography on the atomic level.. I mean when I was typesetting with my atomic pen last week, I was trying to mix in italics with my romans and it all just didn't fit! wtf!! luckily we have JH to help us out!!

OU PRINT RESOURCES

this is for PERFECT BINDING:
1. The printing itself will be $.25 per SIDE of an 8.5 x 11 page.
2. The printing set up fee is $10 per book
If we get the books in by the beginning of next week (October 27th) he can have them printed by the first week of November. All of this is only possible however if we get them all in at the same time, he will also give us discounts on the set up fee if all of the books are formatted similarly.
we can also go in for examples and to check up on stuff.

racism in typography

So I originally posted this with the title of 'hahahahahahahahaha' but upon further inspection, this is REALLY REALLY racist.. So Barack Hussein Obama is a Christian, but the right wing racist rednecks keep trying to tell everyone he's a Muslim (notice the crescent around his neck and the 'Obama '08' in mock Arabic type) but 'Muslim' is just a code that racist people use to not outwardly say BLACK. this poster is trying to stop people from voting for Barack based on his race.

should we open up the blog to the JRs?
do you guys think we should open the blog to let the JRs post stuff??
I wouldnt mind.. it'd hopefully get a little more DISCUSSION going in the forum..
I put a poll up, vote.

Why not?
Considering only 4 different people have EVER posted something on this blog.. why shouldnt we open it up to the juniors?

post office standards
here are two links.
one that deal the post offices guidelines about "zoning" on the envelopes and the other deals with the best (ways that the PO prefers) to have a send to address set up on an envelope.
Also, if you're thinking about using a window envelope go the third link they have a good list of different sizes (or you can try western states envelope). For the shipping label, Don suggested we use the height of the envelope and then make it either square or a little longer. If you would like to work with a standard size of labels that come in sheets Avery is probably the best for those measurements. - - hope this helps
#10 Envelope Measurements
4.125" x 9.5"
The Mailing Label he had in class was
4.125" x 4.125" (square)
OR
4.125" x 4.5" (rectangle)
Business Cards
3.5" x 2"
Word.

Our printer
hey everyone
Don wants to try and document the problems we have been having with the printer in 404.
we are trying to get an idea of how often and how bad it is when it stops working. if I could have everyone reply to me (via reply to blog or email adolan86@gmail.com) with the following info about your experiences with the printer just since the beginning of the quarter:
approx. the total amount of times it has not worked for you in the past 5weeks.
what was happening (paper jamming, not connecting to your computer)
where you printing from your printer or the lab printer.
where you able to resolve the problem; if so how long did it take you.
did it hinder you finishing a project in time.
I will be putting a sheet in the studio on sunday to record these problems as they happen from now on.
Thank you

Senior Class Meeting, 10/5 Notes
Our senior class had an impromptu meeting tonight, and we wanted to update you on what went on.
1. We want to edit our poster designs from 451 as a class. There was a general consensus that we needed to improve upon our designs greatly. It will be up to each individual as to whether or not they would like to participate, but the majority have decided it needed to be done. We plan on having a pin-up next Monday, October 13th at 7:00pm in the studio. You are more than welcome to come and help offer your thoughts. We decided to go back to black and white to help focus more on the typography and compositional elements, although again, it is up to each individual how they want it done. At this pin-up individuals can decide if they are ready to go to print or if they need extra time. We do not want to have a rigid deadline, as to allow as much time as possible to complete better posters.
2. Halloween posters will be sold again this year in an effort to raise money for our class. We want to sell them for $2, and come up with some new creative ideas as to how to get them out. We want to discuss more about the logistics this week as a class after stores and residence halls are contacted. Someone thought we could sell last year's senior's cards as well. There were mixed reviews because they aren't our designs, although they benefit the program. Seniors from last year have already been contacted to get their opinions so we do not sell them without their knowledge. If you have any suggestions, Don, please let us know. We also discussed doing a fund raiser through Kroger cards, as suggested by those who have had past success with them. Izzy and Justine will be investigating this week so we can get started.
3. As a class we want to go on a trip to visit firms in San Diego, California. We figured we could get into contact with Patricia Cue about firms to visit, places to see, stay, etc. As a class we want to do this early 2009 during Winter quarter. We would pay for this individually, not through our program or class funds. Please let us know if this is possible and give us feedback on what you think. If California was too far and/or expensive, we were going to consider Chicago or New York City.
4. This fall we want to visit design firms in Cincinnati. We have a list of contacts of where we would like to go and would like to do this before the quarter is over. Last year, those of us who got to go as juniors felt it was very beneficial. We ran into a roadblock with what day of the week to go as eight of us are enrolled in papermaking on Fridays from 9-3. Also, the group who went to Chicago cannot afford to miss anymore class. The only option would be to go if either a practicum or senior studio was canceled. Those decisions are obviously up to you, the faculty, so let us know what you think.
5. Last, for our current 451 project, we decided as a class that we need to go to Strouds tomorrow to take photographs. We set up those to drive (Nora, Izzy, Amy, and Meredith) and will leave at 1pm unless Nathan has anything else he needs to tell us before we go. We will come back after taking photographs and upload them in the studio and utilize the rest of class for individual work time.
